Free Beer Tomorrow At Salkum Super Market

SALKUM — Some people just don’t seem to have a sense of humor.

The sign over the Salkum Super Market today advertises “curved yellow fruit 59¢ lb., free beer tomorrow.”

I asked the clerks inside, “Have your customers gotten a good giggle over your sign?”

She frowned at me over her reading glasses and thought about it for a moment before answering. “Well, it’s about 50-50,” she said. “Some people are pretty mad about it.”

Huh. I guess any time I see the words “FREE” and “BEER” sitting side by side I get pretty excited. But when I see a sign saying “free beer TOMORROW” hanging over a local grocery store, my heart may skip a beat or two in the first few seconds, but as the words sink in I realize — tomorrow never comes.

I appreciate the good (but a little twisted) humor of store owner Peter Meller. He’s the man behind the “good giggle” in the Salkum Super Eschews Modern Technology; Supports Good Giggle story posted in May of 2012.

I also appreciate the Salkum Super Market and the employees ability to stay consistently interested in their customers and serve their needs with speed and cheerfulness.

Do the employees at the Big Box stores ask how my fishing day went when I walk in? No. But at Salkum Super, they ask every time.

I love you, Small Town Stores, thank you for your service to the community.
